Welcome.

I’m a yoga teacher and, always, a student.

Nothing makes me happier than expanding my practice and helping people with theirs.

What I believe about yoga

I believe the goal of yoga is happiness. The way to get to happiness is knowing yourself. The way to know yourself is to calm the mind. The way to do that? Practice.

Practice means many things in the context of yoga. From “doing no harm” (ahimsa) to meditation. And of course there’s movement and breathing and studying yourself and the great texts and sages. I detail a lot of what I believe or have come to learn in the writings section.

How can I help you?

What to expect in a private class

Public classes are really fun; they build community and are motivating. Who knows why people like to meditate or move together, in the same room, or outside, but they do. There’s an unspoken support yogis give and receive from each other. Friendships form. And in my classes I encourage fun and experimentation. At the same time, you can expect a bit of a workout.

Private lessons take your practice to the next level. I believe in setting some goals for our sessions. Do you want to develop your own practice, or get some guidance on the finer points of poses? Do you want to learn how to meditate? I believe yoga is an expansive, lovely, and never-ending pursuit. Sometimes we need a guide! I know I do.

I don’t do this for the money, yet paying for private lessons represents a commitment to your practice, and enables me to devote more time to studying and teaching.

Private classes are really different, at least the way I teach them. You won’t just be going through the motions. From the moment we start you’ll feel a difference. First of all, we’ll talk. I want to hear what’s going on with you, your body, your psyche—whatever you want to share. Then we’ll start with a short guided meditation, personalized for you. That’s followed by some breathing exercises, and finally movement; depending on your goals, this can be gentle or rigorous. We’ll use props to keep things safe and explore variations. Finally savasana—rest. You can request music, or not; your music or mine. Overall the experience is enriching and even sometimes fun; most always peaceful or joyful.

I’m willing to negotiate price based on where we meet, length of session, number of sessions you’re willing to commit to. Also, I do some lessons on a “sliding scale” basis, based on what you can afford and availability. If you can afford it, please pay the rates below. If you can’t, let’s talk.

Rates. I believe something can always be worked out when it comes to money.

Testimonials

The first set of testimonials below are for private lessons, below that are for classes.

I feel very lucky to have been introduced to yoga by Mark. I had never taken a class previously and only had very limited knowledge of the practice. I feel now like my life has opened up to a new reality, and a new way of being. As a teacher, Mark exudes a positive, uplifting and peaceful energy. He was always aware of what level I was at during his instruction and was able to keep me comfortable in what I was doing, but also challenge me to stretch - mentally and physically -further.
— Mike Pfeffer
I’m so grateful for your teachings—you’ve really revived my interest in yoga, and thanks for all the adjustments
— LadyBee
I’ve spent the last 10 years trying to get into yoga, and learned more in a single yoga lesson with Mark than in all those years combined. Mark has helped me build up my confidence so much, and I highly recommend him if you’re looking to develop a practice! - David I.

The testimonials below are from my Yoga for Absolute Beginners 4-Week Series

“I have been thoroughly impressed by Mark's reverence for not only yoga but also for “doing no harm” (ahimsa). To be honest, I was leery of beginning a yoga practice because its pace is slower than what I'm used to. But Mark has introduced me to an entirely new way to express myself and for that I'm grateful. I cannot recommend him enough.”

- Hannah Hill

I attended a 4-week absolute beginner yoga class with Mark, and it by far exceeded my expectations. He made the class feel so comfortable to ask questions, repeat things, and show us again and again if needed. I felt like he really cared about us and our well-being. If I could have Mark be my one and only yoga teacher for the rest of my life, I would! I've already signed up for more classes. If you have a chance to take ANY class from Mark, I highly recommend it. And just so you know, I'm a very inflexible 61 year old!

-Nancy

I loved these classes so much. This is what beginning yoga classes should look like. Mark is the first yoga teacher I've met who actually goes slow and deep enough for brand new yogis to safely approach a new practice with concrete, physical understanding of what the heck they're really supposed to be doing in each pose. I looked forward to each class all week long. Thanks Mark!
